Document Summary

Lecture 6: nuclear sorting: gated transport: transport of proteins btw 2 similar spaces. After reviewing this lecture, you should be able to: * understand how mutant htt can alter protein transport. * understand ways to experimentally test protein sorting. * describe basic principles behind protein sorting into organelles. * compare and contrast protein transport to the mitochondria vs nucleus. Early symptoms include: irritability depression poor coordination. Later symptoms include: trouble walking, speaking, swallowing, decline in reasoning and thinking. Most live 15-20 yrs after onset of symptoms. Hd is a poly glutamine disorder: htt is the huntington gene, similar pathology to cerebellar ataxia, increase in cag repeats cause disease. Adding many cag repeats causes gfp aggregation: gfp protein containing 17 cags or 688. Cags: more cags lead to aggregation, aggregation of cag- containing protein can lead to aggregation of other proteins.
