Lecture : Placenta Veterinary and Human
Document Summary
In epitheliochorial type, larger molecules (e. g. maternal antibodies) cannot pass. As a result, there is no rapid immune protection for newborns. In some species, colostrum (first milk) is crucial. From the placenta to the liver, the umbilical vein transports oxygenated blood. The teres ligament is covered by the falciform ligament after birth. The majority of oxygenated blood bypasses the liver thanks to the ductus venosus. The caudal vena cava connects the umbilical vein to the caudal vena cava. The foramen ovale is a passageway that permits oxygenated blood to flow from the right to the left atrium. After birth, the fossa ovalis closes and the birth valve shuts. Deoxygenated blood can bypass the lungs thanks to the ductus arteriosus. The pulmonary trunk and the aorta are connected by it. It shuts after birth to form the ligamentum arteriosum. The aorta sends deoxygenated blood to the placenta via the umbilical arteries.
