The articles of confederation served as the written document that established the functions of the national government of the united states after it declared the independence of the united states from great britain. In october 1781, the war virtually came to an end when general cornwallis was surrounded and forced to surrender the british position at yorktown, virginia. Two years later, the treaty of paris made it official america was independent. The most obvious difference was that the american revolution result in the newly independent united states, where the french revolution overthrew its own government.
