HUMR 1001 Lecture : Carleton University - Intro to Human Rights - Saudi Arabia Male Guardianship - HUMR Assignment-2
Document Summary
To begin, the male guardianship law in saudi arabia is a system which is degrading to women, by having their entire lives controlled by a male guardian from birth until death. In further detail, women must obtain permission from their male guardian - a father, uncle, husband, brother or son - to receive basic needs, such as education, work, healthcare, travel, clothing, and more. Unfortunately, every saudi woman, regardless of her economic or social class, is affected by this system by not having the ability to stand up for their rights and receive equal treatment. Furthermore, women"s rights activists have repeatedly called on the government to abolish this system, which the government agreed to do in 2009 and 2013 after its universal. Following both hearings, saudi arabia took limited steps to reform certain aspects of the guardianship system. But, these changes remain insufficient, incomplete, and ineffective since the system remains intact (bissada, 2018).
