Document Summary

The term power distance was coined by a dutch social psychologist named mark mulder in the 1960s. Mulder conducted experiments with individuals in different power relationships. Large power distance societies consider inequality as a normal part of society whereas small power distance societies believe that inequality is wrong and should be minimized. In small power distance societies, independence is key, while centralization is favored in large power distance societies. Respect is highly valued in large power distance societies. The subordinates in large power distance societies are expected to follow orders without questioning authority, while independence and individualism are more highly valued in small power distance societies. There exists no absolute standard for measuring societal power distances. Index (pdi) is used to measure and compare societies. Pdi is plotted on a scale of 0 to 100, where scores close to 0 indicate a smaller power distance.
