BSC 2085C Lecture Notes - Gastrointestinal Tract, Thoracic Cavity, Salivary Gland
Document Summary
Digestive enzymes are sensitive to temperature and ph. Circiular folds are found in: duodenum, ileum, jejunum. Begins in the oral cavity and ends at the anus: mouth and tongue, salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine. 3+1 basic layers of the alimentary canal: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis coat/externa. No peritoneum in the thoracic cavity, therefore esophagus doesn"t have serosa and organs (and parts) in the abdominal pelvic cavity that are retroperitoneal = rectum, ascending and descending colon, duodenum, and pancreas. Ingestion: mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, secretion, absorption, excretion. Digestive enzymes: enzymes are proteins that catalyze (accelerate) chemical reactions, produced by the salivary glands, tongue, stomach, pancreas, and small intestine, enzymes are not altered themselves, digestive enzymes are called hydrolytic (water) enzymes. Lined by mucous membrane: digestion begins, both mechanically and chemically in the mouth, mechanically: mastication (chewing, breaks up and lubricates food, swallowing. Histology: rugae (gastric folds), gastric pit (upper area) and gastric gland (lower are)
