Nutrition: the process by which foods and nutrients affect growth and development, cell function and repair, health maintenance, and disease prevention. Food supplies energy to accomplish daily activities, build/repair tissues, and regulate organs and systems while helping to prevent contraction of certain diseases and aids in the recovery from other diseases. Food also holds symbolic meaning for cultures/communities. Nutrients: elements supplied by food that are necessary for body processes and functions; provide energy for cellular growth and repair, organ function, and body movement. Basal metabolic rate (bmr) = the energy requirement of a person at rest (energy needed to maintain life sustaining activities such as breathing, hr, circulation, temp, etc. ) Liver is primarily responsible for storing glucose in the form of glycogen. It can also create new glucose from fatty acids, which is called glucose neogenesis. Breastfeeding for the first 6 months-2 years of age (convenient, economical, immunological, easier to digest) Formula (designed to resemble breastmilk with same nutrients)
