Chapter 2 (pages 18-23) systems of the body: cns and endocrine system (2-4 questions on test 2 come from chapter 2) The nervous system: central versus peripheral voluntary versus autonomic sympathetic versus parasympathetic branch. Autonomic nervous system is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic and both can"t be active at the same time. Sympathetic- like sympathetic caring going to do the action. Prepares the body for action, during danger, increases heart rate, Ex running from animal or fighting him off. Parasympathetic- para means opposite, active most of the time. Restores body to a normal state, internal organ functions. Medulla, pons, cerebellum, hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala major functions. Cerebellum: a tiny brain attached to the back, it controls voluntary movement of the body. Midbrain- major pathway for sensory and motor impulses moving between forebrain and hindbrain, reward / addiction, Hypothalamus- fight or flight response, hunger and eating and sexual activity. Occipital lobe- visual processes. broca"s area- unable to create speech and talk fully.
