Document Summary

Sensory changes in the older adult are naturally occuring and change gradually throughout the aging process. Impairments in sensory function can alter an older adults ability to participate in everyday activities. Affecting qol and safety which leads to the need for adaptation! Light scatters which reduces space for aqueous humor to drain (decreased visual acuity) Yellowing of lens which interferes with color discrimination especially with lighter colors. Hardening and decreased pliability of the lens. Presbyopia: decrease in near vision with age starting in 40"s/50"s. Harder maintaining focus on things that are up close. Hard to read small fine print especially in dark (needing a flashlight to read a menu in a dim restaurant) Going from a very dark room to outside in light-longer for older adults to adjust, very bright for them! Decreased pupillary___/difficulty adapting to changes in light. Overall a gradual decrease in visual acuity and depth.
