Your university is probably an M-form organization. Its presidentadministers schools, for example, a college of business and acollege of liberal arts. The college of business each of these inturn has a dean who is responsible for faculty departments such aseconomics and finance. Why is an M-form more likely than a U-formto be an efficient way of organizing a university and to organizethe schools within it?
In most universities faculty with specialized interests will oftenattempt to break off from existing departments and form onesdevoted to their own specialties. Do you expect that this willproduce an inefficiency large number of departments? Why do youexpect that pressure by employers to form fragmented departmentswill be a smaller problem in for-profit corporations than innonprofit or governmental universities?
