The United States has a mixed economy that relies heavily on principles of completion and capitalism. Since most of us grew up in this system, it's difficult to imagine things working in any other way. Listen to this short episode from NPR that tells the story of a group of farmers in rural China who came up with a dangerous idea that started an economic transformation and lifted millions of people out of poverty.
1. After the document was signed by the farmers they still had the same land and the same tools as before. Why was there such a dramatic change in what they were able to produce?
2. What is it about competition and the ability to keep what you grow/make such a powerful motivating force?
