Ahmed’s situation

Ahmed wants to buy a car. He spotted a good quality second- hand car on a dealer's lot at the weekend. He would buy it immediately if he had more cash. The dealer will only give him SR 36,000 trade in for his present car. The car Ahmed wants is really good, and the chances are that it will be sold quickly. Ahmed has planned carefully and decided he can swing the deal if he can sell his present vehicle to a private party for around SR 45,000. This would give him SR 40,500 for a down payment and SR 4,500 for accessories he wishes to add. The car is in good condition except for a couple of minor dents in the bumper. The roof rack for his present car won't fit the new one, but can probably be sold and that will help. His new stereo system (installed last month) can be removed and placed in the new car. One of Ahmed’s colleagues is interested in buying his car.

Abdullah’s situation

Abdullah, one of Ahmed's colleagues, heard that Ahmed wants to sell his car and plans to talk to him about it. His son is graduating in three months’ time and will need a car to drive to work. Abdullah can only afford about SR 42,000 including any repairs that might be required and he needs to reserve some money to buy a roof rack. His son has seen the car and thinks it's sporty, especially with the stereo. Abdullah checked the list price for the model of Ahmed's car, and knows the average trade price is SR 36,000 and the average retail price is SR 43,500.
