A flint glass plate (n = 1.66) rests on the bottom of an aquarium tank. The plate is 6.00 cm thick (vertical dimension) and covered with water (n = 1.33) to a depth of 11.9 cm. Calculate the apparent thickness of the plate as viewed from above the water. (Assume nearly normal incidence of light rays.)

Consider the situation in the figure a student diver- a student diver in a pool and an instructor in the edge, outside the water. Since the indices of refraction of air and water are different, the light rays coming from the diver and the instructor are refracted at the surface, changing their apparent position with respect to each other. The diver sees the instructor at an apparent angle of measured from the normal to the interface.
