Steam generators in a "typical" PWR in the USA have thefollowing operating conditions:

Side Pressure,MPa(absolute)
Primary loop 15.5
Secondary loop 6.2

Inlet Temperature,°C Outlet Temperature,°C

Primary side 315 (liquid water) 275 (liquid water)

Seconadary loop 220 (liquid water) 275 (saturated steam)

(1) Calculate the mass flow rate (gallon per minutes) in theprimary and secondary loop
respectively if the reactor is rated at 1000 MWe.
(2) The temperature of the sea water used in the condensing processincreases by
approximately 11.5 °C. Note that 34% of thermal power has beenconverted to
mechanical (turbine)-electrical (generator). Calculate the massflow rate (gallon per
minutes) in the tertiary loop.
(3) About 11 000 gallon per minutes of water is lost to evaporationin a cooling tower.
Calculate the heat lost by evaporation in W.

The thermal efficiency of a nuclear powerplant is 34%
