1. A company has invented a new material that can with standextremely high temp. and conducts heat very effectively. They claimtht it will allow engines to be constructed that will be moreefficient than those currently available. They site the second lawof thermodynamics that states that the efficiency of the Carnotengine depends upon the temp diff. of the heat reservoirs and ahotter engine would be more effic.Student A and Student B discussthese statement and reach different conclusions. Wtih which studentdo you agree and why?

Student A While the effic. of a Carnot engine may depend upon temp.diff. for efficeincy, the carnot engine is an old design and thenew machines have much higher efficincies. besides you cannot be aneffic. of greater than 1 regardless of how it is constructedbecause of the conservation of energy law. This is just a gimmickand a rip off for dummies.

Student B: This could be a dramatic breakthrough. if the designerscan take advantage of these new properties. The Carnot engine setsthe absolute best possible design and a real engine might not reachthat level. Hoewever many rel engines are made more efficeint byrunning hotter.
