A device used to measure the mass of atoms consists of two parts. In the first part, a beam of positive ions with charge q=+1e movesat a constant velocity, v, in the +x direction. An electric field,E, is in the +y direction. There is also a magnetic field, B, inthis region. Because the combined effect of the electric andmagnetic fields, the beam of ions goes in a straight line.
a.) Draw the picture of this region to determine the directions forE and v.
b.) What is the direction of the magnetic field? (label it on thedrawing)
c.) What is the velocity of the ions in terms of e, B and E?
d.) Draw the semi-circular path of the beam after it enters thisnew region.
e.)What is the mass of one of these ions in terms of e, B, E, andthe measured radius, r, of the path.
