The image produced by a diverging lens is upright and virtual no matter where the object is in front of the lens. However that for a converging less, the displacement of the object relative to the focal length determines whether the image is virtual or real, upright or inverted and larger or smaller than the object. Examine the convex and concave mirror. Is diverging more like a convex mirror or a concave mirror?
