Energy exchanges occur whenever an object is chemically changed, heated, cooled, or moved. Our society depends on large amounts of energy but the consumption of energy leads to the depletion of natural resources and pollution in the environment, controversies constantly arise between the environmentalists and those who favor progress. The use of energy leads to economic, social, and ecological problems. We get some of our energy from mining and oil drilling. With mining and drilling, whenever we extract fossil fuels and carry them to urban areas, it causes pollution. 2 types of mines - tunnel mines and strip mines. Strip mines - the advantage is that they are cheaper, disadvantage is that the surface of the land is defaced and destroyed. With oil drilling in some areas it is relatively harmless but disruptive in an aquatic or tundra ecosystem, accidents frequently occur leading to oil spills and fires.
