POLS 112 Lecture Notes - Christian Socialism, Antithesis, Dialectic
Document Summary
Takes issues with precepts of emerging liberalism. Liberals would disagree and say that we are free. Individuals get together, contract, and create state for self-interests. It is impossible to understand the individual from social contact, and social roles. in the market. Concerns exist that there would be inequality. Socrates spent several chapters defining what the ideal state would be: working class (incredibly disdainful of), minimal amounts of property. There is no family for plato"s family class. Plato believes that private ownership would lead to corruption, at the expense of the common good. Plato calls it recipe for disaster, and will divide the state, instead of uniting it. Farmers had common interest to work together: forms of co-operating exist (collectivism). Predictable outcome of interplay and conflict between historical forces. Lot of socialists before marx before christian socialists. Religion is the necessary outcome of life in a capitalist world.
