Modern/postmodern societies characterized by persistent unequal power relations. Look at role of mass media in perpetuating inequality: either sustaining or challenging. Importance of ideology in power 9/11 world: with so-called war-in terror . Iraq, afghanistan, media organizations on various sides disseminate misinformation and propaganda about the us/the west/the islamic world. Ideologically loaded with terms used by mass media professionals (often in unreflective ways) Tells stores about power relationships: when conflict occurs see slides. How is ideological domination achieved? (j. b thompson, 1990) Unequal power relations represented as legitimized as being in everyone"s best interest. In spite of material differences, present economic/political system seen to benefit all or has potential to benefit all: dissimulation. Relations of domination denied, hidden, obscured (ex. gender inequality) Can occur when relationships of power are ignored, glossed over, or taken for granted.
