Modern/postmodern societies characterized by persistent unequal power relations. Look at role of mass media in perpetuating inequality: either sustaining or challenging. Importance of ideology in power 9/11 world: with so-called war-in terror . Iraq, afghanistan, media organizations on various sides disseminate misinformation and propaganda about the us/the west/the islamic world. Ideologically loaded with terms used by mass media professionals (often in unreflective ways) Tells stores about power relationships: when conflict occurs see slides. How is ideological domination achieved? (j. b thompson, 1990) Unequal power relations represented as legitimized as being in everyone"s best interest. In spite of material differences, present economic/political system seen to benefit all or has potential to benefit all: dissimulation. Relations of domination denied, hidden, obscured (ex. gender inequality) Can occur when relationships of power are ignored, glossed over, or taken for granted. Ex. individualize and personalize poverty rather than pointing to structural causes; practice of omission alternative accounts not included: unification.
