Document Summary
Decreased risk of breast, ovarian, uterine cancer. Enhanced immunity (fewer infections including om, pneumonia, uti, bacteremia, bacterial meningitis) Maturation of gi tract and enhanced jaw development. Dependent on release of prolactin (anterior pituitary) and oxytocin (posterior pituitary) Process by which the breasts secrete milk: prolactin = milk production, oxytocin = milk letdown. Begins after delivery of placenta: decreases in progesterone and estrogen. Frequent stimulation and release of milk from breast is necessary for the continued release of prolactin. Maturation of alveoli, proliferation of ductal system, increase in size/weight of breast: stage 2. Transition from colostrum to mature milk: stage 3. Proper attachment of infant to the breast for feeding: positioning. Feedings shorter than 10 min or longer than 40 minutes may be indicator of poor feeding: pumping, evaluation of nourishment. All newborns are expected to lose weight during first few days.
