Personality: characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Personality develops in a dynamic (changing over time) interplay between inner forces interact to make us who we are conscious/ unconscious processes. Ego to resolve tension between id and superego- reality principal. Begins with id- devil type/ impulses, pleasure principal. Around 4/5 develops superego- perfect/ angel type conscience. Anal (18-36m)- pleasure focused on bladder and bowel elimination/control. Phallic (3-6 y) genetals pleasure zone, coping w incestuous feelings. Ego protects by reducing anxiety by unconsciously altering reality. Denial: refusing to believe or even perceive painful realities. Displacement: shifting sexual or aggressive impulses toward more acceptable/ less threatening object or person. Projection: disguising own threatening impulses by attributing them to others. Rationalization: offering self-justifying explanations in place of real more threatening unconscious reasons to one"s action. Reaction formation: switching unacceptable impulses into their opposites.
