Fish, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates rely on outside heat. Plants in the arctic face a short growing season and challenges related to the cold. Arctic tend to be small and freeze tolerant. Lichens are even better suited to these harsh conditions because they lack roots, do not require soil and are tolerant of very low temperatures.
