Politics of colonialism: political and economic divisions . War taxes unhappy people: taxes hit . Purpose was to forge a political union out of the chaos of the american revolution. Pros (from standpoint of state: individually they wouldn"t be taken seriously, entity to help coordinate activity between the states, preserved the independence of the individual states. States did not want to be banded together: veto power over constitutional change, blocking power over national legislation. If they were outvoted when making it law, they could simply block it from their state. Cons: independent power over militia and commerce, central gov"t was too weak, no chief executive (president, no national judiciary, no power to levy taxes, no power to force compliance on policy matters, no power to regulate commerce. Constitutional convention: keep the articles (nj plan, one chamber congress (unicameral) Would have more power to tax: executive committee.
