Document Summary

Previously from lecture 18: we can hypothesize how communities change based on the disturbance frequency. Every colour curve represents a different species. With frequent disturbances, very few species survive: there is a problem with intermediate disturbances. Some species can deal with it and some can"t: caribous don"t like any of these. Communities form landscapes: different communities are not isolated, ex. Communities are patchy: continuous even distribution. Glaciers left their marks: esker, made by rivers flowing in or under glaciers. Some fields have been abandoned for hundreds of years but even now, you can still see the differences in the soil in terms of ph level and composition. There are also current influences: american alligator, dig holes to collect water for dry season, ecosystem engineer. Humans have also current influences: patches on mountains. Landscapes are made up of patches of communities and ecosystems: certain areas are good habitat for certain species while other surrounding different habitat is good for other species.
