A north american approach: sociocultural anthropology , linguistic anthropology dying out, physical and biological anthropology still present, archeology. Postulate three waves of new world migration based on linguistic similarities: amerind family of lanuages (first wave, na-dene family of languages (second wave, inuit-aleut family (approx 4000 years ago) third wave. Some felt he was too focused on details, not enough theory: he was concerned with salvage anthropology trying to as quickly as possibly trying to record what these cultures were doing. Positions people take when writing shaped by own academic bias. Discipline has become more complex able to look at things in more depth. Holistic perspective work with colleuges with different strengths. Helps to avoid reductionist approach want to avoid reductionism when trying to understand what it means to be human.
