Associations between: two or more people, who are independent, interact with consistent patterns, and have interacted over time. Healthy interpersonal relationships: help to reduce loneliness, enhance self-esteem, contribute to emotional and physical health, contribute to happiness, help maximize pleasure and minimize pain, give intellectual, physical, and emotional stimulation. Dark side: obsession, codependency, abuse, deception/getting taken advantage of. Relationships are dynamic: are always being negotiated / constructed through communication, have phases, incorporate conflicts and contradictions. Along with meanings, identities, and other aspects of our realities. Opposing desires within the same person: primary contradictions, autonomy and connection, stability and change, expression and privacy. The dynamics of negotiating emotions, creating friendships: friendship and social survival , emotional coaching, reciprocity, comfort, advice. Importance: causes of hurt are multidimensional, people can perform being hurt in different ways, causes of hurt shape how people understand their relationships and themselves.
