Psych is the software of the brain. In order to be functional (p x e -> person interacting with the environment) you have to get the world inside our brain. Afferent -> incoming direction: sensation makes this possible (vision, audition, etc. ) Once material is in nervous system, interpretation occurs: perception -> putting meaning to it. Central nervous system constantly bringin in and interpreting infor: occurs in the brain. Info comes into neuron via dendrites, processed by soma, info sent out through axon. Optic nerve -> takes in visuals, sends to brain to process: everything has this kind of relationship. Interneurons: stay in brain: dendrites in contact with axons of other neurons, any one could have 80 thousand connections. When people started figuring out elevtricity, people thought it could mimic the braon: luigi galvani. Luigi galvani: lived mid-to-late 1700s, well-known physicist, wanted to demonstrate neurons operate electrically. Attached electrical wires to dead frog, frog jumped: concluded that"s how nerves work.
