For our ancestors, group living offered: protection from predators, efficiency in food acquisition, assistance in child rearing, defense against human aggressors. Fulfills a psychological need to belong: being around others can be fulfilling to us as well. Dominant and dominated groups merge: race, socioeconomic. The mere presence of groups can affect behavior. Considered the first study in social psychology.
