PSY315H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cluster Reduction
Document Summary
Whether or not children"s initial acquisition of sound. How fine grained are children representation of sound. Children"s knowledge of the sound pattern of word. The way they mispronounce consistency across languages: stopping- subset of consonants airflow is stopped- with an abrupt sound of air, final consonant devoicing. Initial consonant voicing: cluster reduction- situation where 2 consonants occur in a sequence one consonant disappears so no longer a cluster, fronting, unstressed syllable deletion, final consonant deletion, desensitization, gliding. Processes are quite universal not linked to phonemic inventory of language but in some cases it is. Emergence of particular sound and what children do in the mean time acquiring it. Child could hear in adult speech they were wrong. Child knew right correct sound pattern for the word (comprehension) Child knows but unable to produce it production problem not a misunderstanding of the child. Child in phase mispronounced sound patterns of words. Glass and grass share a sound pattern.
