Document Summary

Thucydides" history of the peloponnesian war describes the reasons why sparta and. Athens had gone to war and explains his view on the real cause of the war. The immediate cause of the war started over the dispute in epidamnus. Corinth sends troops to epidamnus to help out while athens supported corcyra and thus violating the treaty it had with sparta. What was ironic about this dispute was that epidamnus was a colony of corcyra yet when it asked corcyra for help, corcyra refused. However when the corcyraeans discovered that the colony was handed over to corinth, they reacted violently and demanded the epidamnias to send the corinth troops and settlers away (thucydides, 50). Epidamnus was in distress, they took no steps towards bringing it under their control; but as soon as we came to relieve it, they forcibly took possession of it (thucydides, 59).
