PSC 1 Chapter Notes -Detection Theory, Sensory Neuroscience, Psych
Document Summary
1/22/14: detection of and reaction of sensory stimuli by sensory organs and transmission of response to, introduction. What is perception: processing and interpretation of sensory stimuli. How do they work together: your sensations are a result of your perceptions. Subcortical structures- thalamus relay center for the sensory information; except olfaction thalamus- sensory gateway hippocampus- memory. Psychophysics investigates the psychological processing of physical stimuli important components: sensory thresholds, signal detection theory, sensory adaptation. How is the stimulus transduced: what is the pathway to the brain? chemical senses, taste, smell touch senses, temperature, pressure, and pain sound sight proprioception, kinesthetic, vestibular. What is taste: gustation chemicals in solution taste buds, tongue, mouth, throat five basic tastes, sweet, sours, salty, bitter, umami. What is smell: olfaction volatile chemicals closely related to sensation of taste. What is the pathway to the brain: along the olfactory nerve. How is pain transduced: receptors are found everywhere.
