Threat to primates is habitat disturbance, although hunting pressure and the bushmeat market are also important. Conservation policies include various efforts at working with, not against, local people, and trying to find sustainable forest management strategies and economic incentives such as eco-tourism to motivate local people to protect their local forests and primate populations. Improved public awareness can also help for example, hunting and butchering primates exposes humans to the possibility of disease transmission from nonhuman primates to primates (such as aids), and this awareness may reduce hunting pressure. Box 12. 1 features the work of conservation international, headed by primatologist russ. Mittermeier, as an example of an ngo (nongovernmental organization) working to protect primates and their habitats around the world. Finally, the section on noninvasive research explains recent advances in field and lab methods that allow us to collected biological samples from wild animals without trapping them for example using feces, urine, and hair.
