Can tell the diff from waxing- right side of the moon is lit, waning- left side of moon is lit. Earth shadow has nothing to do with the blockage of half the moon being shown. You are on a moon base observing the earth the earth is in first quarter phase. The moons obital path has a 5 degree incline/decince over the line of node from the ecliptic. Line of node- where the suns ecliptic and moons orbital path cross. Lunar eclipse- moon must be full and at a node- moon falls into the earths shadow. In the umbra- the moon is blood red totality : three types: total, partial, prenumbral, solar and lunar eclipses come in pairs waning cresent.
