Counting words, terms, expressions that may come back and making conclusions from trends: e. g. , looking at past court proceedings and trying to establish a pattern of judgements for a particular judge. Usefulness is to allow for a systematic comparison. Start with a research question and well-defined concepts. Population is the population of cases: the entire set of cases that you could pick from. If you are studying countries, it is all the countries. When selecting cases, it may be necessary to sample. If you are counting, it would be good if you had a sample that represented the whole population. The big thing the author is telling you, or general idea of the article: frequency. Counting part a key term or expression that you are trying to see how often is used: intensity.
