Document Summary

Ketones & aldehydes can undergo hydrogenation: ni catalyst (special --> raney ni) ex: r. We"ve used pd/c (palladium on c) or pt to reduce alkenes, but don"t reduce ketones. But raney ni does reduce alkenes and alkynes. Prepare the ketone ring w/ 4 c or less groups --> diels alder. Might have been harder to see if we started with any of the above products for other synthesis. But can add functional groups to make rxns work and then remove them. Koh is actually not a reducing agentit"s the h"s on the n that reducethe base rearranges the h atoms --> internal reduction. Can also do this overall rxn by clemmenson reduction. This rxn: strong base, other things might not survive :( but clemmenson reduces everything, so if there were other functional groups, they will get reduced tooso w-k good for nitro groups. Awesome nucleophile for sn2 (even though it"s huge and has giant groupswhy?)
