Prostitution in a neighbourhood may be a cause for crime for that neighbourhood. A set of fundamental assumptions about some type of crime, how we think about it, and how we do research about it. Looked at neighbourhoods as the unit of analysis. Theory is a concept, a statement or a sentence like a proposition or hypothesis, to explain something. Explain why criminal behaviour occurs, why do we have repeat offenders (biological component bad seed of a family ) y broken homes lead to higher levels of crime amongst single mothers. Attempt to predict criminal behaviour- such as face shapes, body shapes, length of earlobes, etc y historically a useful factor. Theories of crime either explain crime or attempt to predict crime. Need to determine which theories are important, and make sense, and what they try to explain or predict and how useful they are. More likely to be victimized: y women y people in poor neighbourhoods.
