FRHD 3150 Lecture : video summary!
Document Summary
Video on kids with disabilities >> kids argue like gorillas, according to rick. You need: a knowledge base (why do they do what they do), techniques (a bag of tricks to draw from), a philosophy (a belief system in how these kids should be handled) Negative reinforcement only stops certain behaviours, doesn"t change them. Confiscating things- not a good idea because children learn their values based on what they see us do, not what we tell them to do; don"t be surprised if they take toys from someone younger. Imposing school tasks as punishment- delivers the message that school is inherently bad. Things that are good- structure, as in predictability. Preventative discipline (eat your dinner, you get dessert- translates to the classroom in that you make a list of things to do for the day and then the last item on the list is something desirable to the child)
