Part b : aboriginal cultures at the time of contact. Lecture 7: the norse contact with skraelings the view looking __ at the north pole. Different routes of travel for europeans seen. Norse ( vikings ): first europeans known to have definitely established colonies in north. The 1st european contact w/ aboriginal peoples in the new world. The evidence: (for europeans eg. norse) for being in na thousands of years ago: Oral traditions the norse told for generations, and were written down in 13th century -> became a written record. Vinland (newfoundland & gulf of st. lawrence region). Sails west from greenland, and finds new countries not discovered by europeans before. Others such as thorvald and karlsefni arrived later. Karlsefni s wife gudrid had a son named sharri (first european boy to be born on continent first non-aboriginal) Contact with skraelings -> people who were here already, the indigenous folk who lived in the 3 countries (helluland, etc. )
