Quantizing: transformation of codes (qualitative data) into variable (quantitative data) Qualitative provides meaning of quantitative data in context. Useful for researching complex issues that occur at multiple scales. Can increase validity of both qualitative and quantitative methods (via method triangulation) Bring together best of both methods while offsetting weaknesses of each. Purist sees this as violations of research paradigm.
