Mdo"s are people who have come into contact with the criminal justice system and have a mental disorder. Includes: un t to stand trial, ncrmd, mentally disordered/mentally ill. Dsm-iv: classify on a primary diagnosis basis, different axis used for different disorders with a separate criteria. Axis 1: clinical disorders (affect and perceived reality, ex. schizophrenia) Axis 2: personality disorders and mental retardation. Axis 5: global functioning (on a 1/100 scale 100 being that you"re well adapted) Problems: developed primarily by psychiatrists and may not re ect psychological research, unrelated to causation (as it is a post-diagnosis, different classi cation systems, prevalence varies by model used (re ects under or over-diagnosis) To be found guilty, you need to establish mens rea (intent) and actus reus (act) Cannot communicate with counsel: criteria is quite high to be considered un t, court decides on a balance of probabilities if he/she is un t, once found un t:
