Distributed Intelligent Systems
Practical 1: Machine Intelligence
Since Alan Turing's proposed test for machine intelligence in 19501, many AI-inspired computer
programs and Chatbots have been written with a view to behaving (or conversating) intelligently,
and of course, to pass the Turing test. ELIZA (by Joseph Weizenbaum, 1966) has continued to be
one of such popular programs.
[Try ELIZA from http://psych.fullerton.edu/mbirnbaum/psych101/Eliza.htm].
Others that have won The Loebner Prize (1990 - ) include ALICE (Artificial Linguistic Internet
Computer Entity, ), Mitsuku ( etc.
(see also and a collection of
chatbots on https://www.chatbots.org/)
Complete the following tasks for Part 1.1 of the coursework assessment:
Q1.1 [30%]. Choose and test at least TWO fairly advanced Chatbots from those available on the
Internet and describe the characteristics (or "personality") of each. Supplement this
by reading a transcript of “dialogues with colourful personalities of early AI”
(attached Chatbots_dialogues with colorful personalities of early ai.pdf.) Comment
on how these programs can PASS or FAIL the Turing test.
Q1.2 [20%]. Based on your observations from the Chatbot conversations or otherwise, would you
consider the Turing test to be an adequate measure of machine intelligence? Explain
your reasons thoroughly (Read: some criticisms of the Turing Test in Luger (Chapter
1 on KLE)2 & its Wikipedia entry)).
Q1.3 [30%]. Futuristic science fiction in movies has provided a lot of speculation over what AI can
achieve. Choose an AI-based character or robot from a fictional movie and describe
their intelligent behaviours or actions (e.g., Sonny in I, Robot; or a similarly advanced
fictional AI character.). Comment briefly on why their reasoning is not always correct.
Q1.4 [20%]. Discuss two potentially negative effects on society of the development of artificial
intelligence techniques.
Answers for each question should not exceed 150 words.
