White matter (tree-like), in each hemisphere internally. Cerebellar peduncles connect cerebellum to the brain stem. 4th ventricle is between the cerebellum + brain stem. Cranial nerves come out from different parts of the brain stem. All emerge from anterior part of the brain stem. Except for cni (olfactory) from limbic system. Cniv (trochlear) from posterior brain stem. Arise from limbic system/olfactory mucosa of the nose. Olfactory terminals are embedded in the olfactory mucosa of the nose (on superior nasal cavity/cribiform plate of ethmoid) From back of eye/retina (connects to rods + cones here) R + l converge @ optic chiasma + relayed to other brain areas (association, language etc) Optic chiasma is just superior to the pituitary gland in the hypoglossal fossa, if pituitary is enlarged, can compress. Exits optic canal (in lesser wing of sphenoid) 4 of 6 extrinsic eye mm medial rectus, inferior rectus, superior rectus, inferior. Carries parasympathetic fibres to the iris + lens.
