Document Summary

Renal pelvis (big column going out of kidney) Medulla contains loop of henle and collecting tubules. Parts exclusively in the cortex = bowman(cid:495)s capsule, glomerulus, proximal. Renal corpuscle = bowman(cid:495)s capsule + glomerulus, allows differentiation. Efferent arteriole (going out of glomerulus) between cortex and medulla. Peritubular capillaries (blood vessels surrounding the tubules in the cortex) Loop of henle (dipping down into renal pyramid) Vasa recta (blood vessels surrounding the tubules in the renal medulla) Distal convoluted tubule (after loop of henle, leading into collecting duct) Collecting duct (where nephron drains into, goes down into medulla/pyramid) Glomerular filtration of blood produces filtrate containing all blood components except red & white cells, platelets & large molecules (proteins) Mainly selective tubular reabsorption of glucose, aas, na+/cl-, h2o (to balance osmotic pressure), bicarbonate. Also tubular secretion of nh4+ and h+ Maintain and establish concentration gradient in the medulla. Water leaves filtrate in response to concentration of the surrounding interstitial fluid.
