Definition of state: set of permanent administrative, legal, and coercive systems that maintains a monopoly over the legitimate use of force in a given territory. Includes: defense force, taxation office, police, health service . =the state. Weber"s definition of state: a human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory - legitmate use of physical force. States vary: state strength/capacity=its ability to do those things (can its meet its own goals) or state scope/size= the range of things the state tries to do. According to putnam fit states are small and strong eg: the us; fat states are big and weak eg: turkey; bodybuilder states are big and strong eg: france; and weakling states are small and weak eg: sierra leone. -the state is defined as the permanent institutional core of political authority on which regimes rest and depend.
