A reflex is an involuntary physiological reaction to certain stimuli. A reflex is triggered when a certain threshold is reached. The intensity of the response depends on the frequency of the elicited signals for the reflex which in turn is controlled by the intensity of the stimuli. Modern views have added cognitive and affective factors into our understanding of reflex e. g. emotions and thought can control the threshold and thus the reflexes. 1. Instincts are untaught behaviour that is unique for certain species and are attributed to the genetic makeup of the species itself. On the other hand, learnt behaviours are called. To highlight the difference, studies have shown that male monkeys isolated until puberty show an innate tendency to be with female monkeys. However, when given the chance to copulate with the other sex, the monkeys lack the ability to do so. In summary, instincts were an important source of behaviour, but were shaped and elaborated by learning (william james).
