Total circulating volume for full term neonate is 85 ml/kg. Volume for a premature neonate is 95 ml/kg. 10 years or older 20 ml (10ml /bottle) 10 years or older (poor veins) less than 20 ml. Volume < 5mls had a approx. Maximising yield and utility- how many sets and when. Multiple sets allow determination of clinical relevance of isolates usually viewed as contaminants. Minimum: an initial 2 sets from 2 sites. Try to take prior to antibiotic administration. Consider follow up bc 4-6 hrs later. 3 initial sets(from 3 different sites) . At least 1 hour apart between 1st and last set. Consider 4 sets in first 24 hrs if true bacteraemia with organism who is usually contaminant prosthetic valve endocarditis. Timing with fever does not influence yield.
