MGMT1135 Final: MGMT1135_ SPAN OF CONTROL
Document Summary
In an aluminium tubing plant, production is generally organised into five departments: Casting; press; tubing; finishing; and inspect, pack and ship. This is an example of process departmentalisation, because each department specialises in one specific phase in the production of aluminium tubing. Process departmentalisation can be used for processing customers as well as products. In the past, when you went to a state motor transport office to get a driver"s licence, you might have progressed through several departments before you received your licence. Applicants went through three steps, each handled by a separate department: validation by the motor vehicles division; processing by the licensing department; and payment collection by the finance department. Today, applicants are more likely to be processed at a one-stop shop: a service counter where the one department completes all the processes necessary for the issue of a licence. This has been brought about by the availability of sophisticated information systems and photographic technology.
