Document Summary

Exercise intensity can be measured by : vo2. Vo2max is the amount of oxygen an individual can take into the body. And be utilised by the muscle during a single bout of exercise. Using vo2 numbers, we can calculate the (targeted) intensity that we would prescribe to an individual . This is done through a simple calculation: (o2 consumed during rest: mets calculation (metabolic equivalent of task) Eg: individual has vo2max (100%) of 35ml/min/kg of work. = 0. 8 x 35ml/min/kg = 28ml/min/kg = 8 mets\ Take this value of (28ml/kg/min) and divide it by 3. 5 to see how many mets that is. And use it to tally against an exercise met chart to assist with prescription: heart rate. Hr value has a direct relationship with the intensity of exercise. Hrmax = 220 age (+/- 10%) On starting position of exercise (seated/standing etc) Hrmax for swimming and cycling (weight assisted)
