Document Summary

Categorical data: score is in specific categories male/female. Measurement data: scores that are measured along a continuum age/strength. The type of data we collect has direct ramifications for the types of statistics we can obtain. It influences the type of statistical approach we can use. Measurement data allows more sophisticated statistical analysis averages . Categorical data allows us to look at percentages or proportions i. e. 25% of sample were female: discrete variables lead to categorical data which include things like frequencies/percentages, continuous variables lead to measurement data which include means/variance/standard deviation. There are four scales that are used to process the data we obtain. The scale used will vary depending on the data we have obtained. Nominal scales: are basic and use simple categories, have no underlying scale and no ordering, an example is a survey of religion (christian, muslim, jewish, other), cannot say one category is larger/higher/more than another.
